[Translation by A Fan from USA of an interview posted by Khun Ploy above]

THE FIRST TIME FOR…THIS MAN…JESDAPORN PHOLDEE

If people still do not know this man, it will not be long when he becomes better known with a new role. This is his first role as “Dang Bireley.” When we say his name, the young generation like you and me may not be familiar with. But if you ask people who are fathers or grandfathers, they would know him well from various books. The book with the most details is called “The Gangster’s Path” written by Piek Visutkasat, the intimate friend of Dang Bireley.

And when Thai Entertainment made this into a movie, the selection of an actor for each role was not easy. The lucky man who took the role of Dang Bireley was this young man, Tik—Jesdaporn Pholdee. Many people may be familiar with his face from various commercials. Lets get to know him more because when the movie is in the theater, we will get to know him even more from it.

The interviewer: Hello Tik

Tik: Hello. I’m Tik, Jesdaporn Pholdee.

The interviewer: What college are you in at the moment?

Tik: I’m at the Thai Chamber of Commerce University in the second year of the Faculty of Management. I was just done with an examination.

The interviewer: What past workmanship have you had?

Tik: Mostly commercials such as one with the Thai Tourism Authority, the 600-Baht series. But my face could not be seen all that much.

The interviewer: Who contacted you for your first movie?

Tik: The movie company. I was asked to cast the role and at first I thought I would not get it because there were a lot of people casting the role of Dang Bireley. They were very scrupulous in selecting someone for this role. I was glad when they told me I got it.

The interviewer: Was it difficult to play a role of Dang Bireley?

Tik: I admit it was difficult because I was very stiff in the beginning. But after a while, everything fell into place so I was not uptight anymore. Before acting, I had to learn how to act first. Once I had, I could do it.

The interviewer: How good do you think you were?

Tik: This has to be decided by the audience as to how good or bad I was. I was very dedicated to this job and I admit my handiwork was still new. The viewers who have watched the movie could give me critique so I can improve my skills.

The interviewer: Are you close to the friends in the movie?

Tik: I am very happy because it was my first movie and I got to meet all the good friends such as Num, P’Joke, P’Tok, P’Keng and Ex who was also good [from the translator: P’ is pronounced “pee.” It is a word used to respectfully address someone somewhat older such as an older brother or sister.] P’Joke and I study at the same college so we have become closer once we were in the same movie. I went to Num’s store a lot. I worked with them for the first time and they were all good. This was a good moral support because there was some teaching when we worked, some introduction, and some sincerity like brothers. This included P’Oui, the director. He would like us to be close but whenever we went out together, we came back drunk (laugh).

The interviewer: This shows you were very close.

Yes. P’Oui took us immediately out to dinner to get together after the actor selection. He also brought along Piek in real life to talk to us. He taught me a lot so I understood Dang Bireley better.

The interviewer: What type of a person was Dang Bireley?

Tik: Dang Bireley was like, Uhh…How should I say this? This was a movie of a real person in the past. Dang Bireley was really some powerful gangster during that time. As for his temperament and the role I had to take as him, he was someone who loved his friends and his mother very much. In regards to his spirit, he was a very good person, someone with a very good heart, who was kind but his downside was that he suppressed things inside. He had some inferiority and was a problematic child.

The interviewer: How did the problem start?

Tik: His mother was a prostitute so he had no father. He saw his mother physically abused a lot and he could not take it. He killed from the time he was still young because he did not like people hurting his mother. He loved her very much and at the end, he tried to become ordained as a monk but there was a shootout in the middle of the ceremony. His friends died for him because he was beloved by them. Like Laemsingh Piek who loved him to the point he could die for Dang.

The interviewer: So this was challenging.

Tik: Yes, very much so. I admit all the scenes were difficult, every single one of them. Uhh! There was one particularly difficult scene such as during a breaking point between him, Puk and Dum. This was the scene when we had to negotiate. I needed to show them I was very powerful so the audience would believe in the character and that such a small person could cause people fear. Dang was not a bawling type. People already feared him in his idle state.

The interviewer: This story tells us what a gangster is?

Tik: Not exactly. But most gangsters are not loud. The loud ones are usually tramps.

The interviewer: You worked with the leading actress for the first time.

Tik: She was another person I was glad I had a chance to work with. She got along easily with people. She was courteous and not haughty. Although she was at an international level, she could still sit there to have papaya salad. She was easy and comfortable. So when she was in a scene, she was not serious about whether she was going to be nude or not. In truth, there was not much nudity. I felt good working with her.

The interviewer: How did you feel when you meet her the first time?

Tik: The leading female character for this role was really hard to find from the beginning. We couldn’t find one even when we had already filmed many parts of the movie. They eventually chose Ex. I watched her in some commercials and music videos before that and I had already liked her because I saw her workmanship. I was surprised and even questioned if she would accept it. I was a man but I was still uncomfortable with the role. However, she was not at all. It was her nature and it helped me feel less uncomfortable. It was like a little shyness mix with smoothness, like we really were lovers.

The interviewer: Did you teach each other?

Tik: Hmm…Not really teaching but more like if we had to play an intimate role in a scene, we had a prior agreement that we would have to be physically touching each other and we asked for each other’s permission. We apologized beforehand. She was okay and it was not a problem. We had to talk about it before that.

The interviewer: Was there an impressive scene?

Tik: The impressive scene was when the leading male character met the leading lady character for the first time. This was a James Dean remembrance scene. I was very nervous, particularly the night before. And in the scene, he had to dance with her.

The interviewer: From what you know so far, do you know what type of a person she is?

Tik: She is straightforward, vivacious, and joyful. Uh! But when she is mad, she is like incensed. But mostly she is good-humored all the time.

The interviewer: Does she have funny stories?

Tik: Yes. Once we were at the Chalermthani Theater to film a scene. There was an old house nearby and it was early in the morning. Ex appeared as if she wanted to use a restroom. I knew the restroom was in quite an unfavorable condition and she was not brave enough to tell anyone. She asked the hairstylist to go with her. They whispered to each other and told the driver to take them to a nearby hotel. I teased her when I saw that…Ah…you are thinking about going to the hotel, aren’t you? She vehemently denied and said she was going there to meet a friend she had an appointment with. She adamantly denied it. Num, P’Joke and I knew all about it. She was gone for a long time before she returned. I teased her…Hmm…you are now comfortable, aren’t you? We teased her a lot on that and she was shy about it. She denied it and really was shy about it.

The interviewer: What would you like to leave her with?

Tik: Beware of being crushed to death by the money. I would like her to take care of her health. I see that she accepts too many jobs and does not have enough time for rest. I have pity for her. We have an attachment as friends. She can tell me what she wishes. If she wants an advice, she has got it. I will be glad to hear and give her my advice always.

The interviewer: What would you like to leave the movie-goers with?

Tik: I would like to leave them with the movie “2499 The Gangsters Take Over the City.” We were very determined because we would like it to come out good. The art, the studio, and the wardrobe departments had to find popular vintage clothes so it is worth watching. In addition, I would leave them with the atmosphere of the past to watch. Every thing was very realistic.

Whoever likes an action movie, please watch it in April, exactly in the hottest month. Please try to watch the workmanship of these people because Thai movies have been increasingly in a slump. It would be good to support Thai people so the money would not leak out of the country.
